Electric vs. Piston vs. Hybrid vs. Hydrogen: Choosing the Right UAV Power System

Power choice follows from the mission profile: hours in the air, payload mass, ambient temperature, and how far the aircraft operates from a charger or a fuel drum.

The short version

  • Electric: quiet, simple, best below roughly 45 minutes of endurance
  • Piston: long endurance with liquid fuel logistics and more maintenance
  • Hybrid: range extension where infrastructure is thin, at higher unit cost
  • Hydrogen: long endurance with limited refuelling points today

What to check before quoting

Ask for the endurance figure at your payload, not the marketing figure at zero payload. Then confirm the spare-part cycle for the power module: an engine that needs a rebuild every 200 hours changes the cost per flight hour more than the purchase price does.
